Twenty-five years ago, the Foundation for Educational Services was founded with a vision that recognised education as extending far beyond the walls of the classroom. Established in 2001 during a period of national transformation, FES emerged to support children, families, and communities through innovative, inclusive and responsive educational services. Initial programmes focused mainly on literacy and family participation in education. The early programmes included the Ħilti Family Literacy Programme, Parental Empowerment programmes, and Parental Involvement in Education programmes.
These initiatives were created to complement Malta’s formal education system and promote lifelong learning. However, what began as an initiative rooted in family literacy, social inclusion and community outreach gradually expanded in scope and impact, responding to the changing educational and social needs of Maltese society, and has now evolved to become one of Malta’s most vibrant and essential educational entities.
Today, FES stands at the heart of thousands of families’ daily lives through childcare services for children aged 0 to 3 years, the after-school service Klabb 3-16, and Skolasajf during the summer months. Over the years, the Foundation has worked steadily to transform public perceptions of these services, demonstrating that they are far more than simple childminding solutions. They are also spaces of belonging, learning, creativity and care, designed to support children’s holistic development while empowering families and communities. Over the years, the Foundation has continuously adapted to the evolving realities of society, embracing growth, partnerships and innovation while remaining committed to its mission of supporting an evolving society through a holistic service to the child.
As we celebrate this important milestone, we also look ahead with renewed purpose. The future calls for reflection, courage and reassessment, ensuring that every decision, policy and service remains firmly centred on the rights and wellbeing not only of parents, but predominantly of the child. As FES continues to evolve as a provider of services, more than ever it must strengthen its focus on truly child-oriented educational experiences that empower, nurture and inspire future generations.
